Ireland,1941, Irish Republicans have made a bond with Nazi Germany to help the on going struggle with Great Britain. A small group of IRA soldiers is recruited in a village, suffering leadership of the lame Don McGinnis (Dan O'Herlihy). One of the recruits is Dermot O'Neill (Robert Mitchum), who wants to free Ireland, but is not as convinced of the means as are the other soldiers.

The river unites a farmer recently released from prison, his young son, and an ambitious saloon singer. In order to survive, each must be purged of anger and each must learn to understand and care for the others.

Heading west for his health, Colonel Lambeth takes his daughter Rill along. Lost on the desert they are saved by Pecos and Chito. The Colonel hires the two and the Lambeths soon find themselves mixed up in Pecos' trouble. Pecos has killed Sawtelle's brother and Sawtelle as head of the vigilantes is after him.
