Description
Details Dwight Murphy's many accomplishments, especially in Santa Barbara and California. Dwight Murphy arrived in Santa Barbara from East St. Louis in 1905 and adopted Santa Barbara as his new home. With his commitment to Progressivism and a strong sense of noblesse oblige, he worked with Thomas More Storke and Major Max Fleischmann on the post-earthquake renaissance, contributing to the city through many preservation efforts involving the waterfront, parks, rebuilding the mission, etc. An avid equestrian, Murphy also supported the Santa Barbara National Horse Show and Old Spanish Days Fiesta, helped protect and breed the Palomino, and helped stop abuses in the horse racing industry.
